Lincoln Castle

Lincoln Castle is the birthplace of the city. It was here on the hill-top site that the Romans built their first fortress and later the early settlement.

In 1068, William the Conqueror evicted 166 Saxon families from their homes to built his Castle. Now it stands as a monument to Norman architecture and the culture the Normans brought with them.

A troll around the ramparts takes you from the Observatory tower, giving magnificent views of the City, over the East Gate with its twin towers and on to the 13th century Cobb Hall. Continuing along the North Wall, the walk brings you to the West Gate, the main entrance in medieval times and recently reopened after 500 years.

Behind the huge Victorian prison complex lies Lucy Tower which was the medieval keep and later became the Victorial burial ground for convicts.

The prison houses not only the unique prison chapel featuring the harsh "Pentonville" separate system, but also King John's original 1215 Magna Carta - one of only four in the world.

Lincoln Castle brings over nine centuries of history life.
