Heritage > British Castles

Not much remains of the vast brick fortifications erected by Sir John Fastolf, the model for Shakespeare's Falstaff, in 1432. However, the giant 98 foot tower that stood at the very heart of the castle is well preserved. In 1469 the Paston family put up a gallant but unsuccessful defence with a force of 30 pitted against an army of 3,000 men led by the Duke of Norfolk
