Thirlestane Castle

One of the oldest and finest castles in Scotland, is set in magnificent Border hills at Lauder. Built originally as a defensive fort in the 13th century it was rebuilt in the 16th century to become the home of the Maitlands. As the seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale it was enlarged and embellished over the centuries but it remains home to the Maitland family to this day and in the richly adorned rooms many of its treasures can be seen.

The magnificent state rooms display the finest plasterwork ceilings of the Restoration Period in existance. This inspired work was commissioned by the Duke of Lauderdale who effectively ruled Scotland as a memeber of King Charles II's Cabal Cabinet. His ghost is said to haunt the castle.

The family nurseries house a large collection of historic toys which fascinate all generations. Some are in replica form for today's children to use, and dipping into the dressing up chest can produce some memorable moments on a family holiday.

The old kitchens and laundries are restored and equipped as in earlier days and the past Border Country Life Exhibitions form the last part of the castle tour. They show aspects of domestic, sporting and agricultural life in the romantic Scottish Borders over the centuries.

Inside the castle, wonderful afternoon teas are available on open afternoons in what was once the old servants' hall. The castle gift shop offers a wide range of souvenirs, and some unusual toys too.
