Following Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon's marriage into the Royal Family in 1923, her mother, the Countess of Strathmore, was later to arrange the following three rooms, previously used as bedrooms, to serve as a private suite whenever the royal couple visited Glamis.
The Queen Mother's Sitting Room
The carved oak chimneypiece in this room with its matching overmantel, makes a suitable place to display the collection of Dutch and Chinese porcelain. The piece of tapestry set into the overmantel is fr om the cut-down tapestry in the Billiard Room. The ancient oak press with its elaborate carvings is worthy of note as are the tapestries which Lady Strathmore restored to their rightful place after they had been stored away for years.
There is a small stone seat just inside the door and a little ghostly figure of a boy servant has been seen sitting there patiently waiting.
In the corridor, before entering the Queen Mother's bedroom, there are several family portraits including John, 4th Earl of S trathmore.
The Queen Mother's Bedroom
In this room hangs a copy of the beautiful portrait of H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother when Duchess of York, by de Laszlo. Other portraits here are of Her Majesty's brothers and sisters. The four- posterwith its tall fluted columns and carved giltfretworktop with its hangings has been restored. The padded headboard has a scroll design with thistles. The bed-hangings, worked by Lady Strathmore, are of particular interest. Inside the bed's pelmet is embroidered the monogram 'C & C' for Claude and Cecilia (the 14th Earl and Countess) and the names of all their children and their dates of birth, including 'Elizabeth 1900' and 'Michael 1893', grandfather of the present Earl.
The King's Room This was King George VI's dressing room and contains the recently restored Kinghorne Bed. It has three outer valances with central panels of applied silk decorated with straight stitches and couching. They are from a bed made for the 3rd Earl of Kingho rne in the late 17th century and bear his coat of arms.
