Dunstanburgh Castle
JMW Turner was so entranced by the sight of this romantic ruin on the Northumbrian coast that he painted Dunstanburgh Castle three times. Two enormous gatehouse towers remain from the original structure built by Henry of Lancaster and subsequently upgraded by John of Gaunt in the 1370's. Highly recommended is the one and a half mile walk from Craster car park over the moor and along the coast to Dunstanburgh.
