Alnwick Castle

A stronghold of the Percys ever since 1309, Alnwick is a classic example of a formidable medieval fortress and was the prize possession in a long series of border battles between the English and the Scots. Particularly impressive are the 15th century gatehouse and barbican, as well as the sturdy curtain walls and towers. Nevertheless, the castle was extensively renovated in the 19th century in best Victorian Gothic style and today houses paintings by Van Dyck, Titian, Tintoretto and Turner.
