Bunratty Castle, Bunratty - The three murder holes located in the walls of what was once the strongest castle in Munster enabled defenders to pour boiling water on attackers below.
The MacNamara family built the great keep at Bunratty around 1450 and it subsequently feel into the hands of the O'Briens, Princes of Thomond.
A later occupant was Admiral Penn, father of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvannia. The restored castle today gives visitors an insight into the life in the 15th centuries, and the medieval banquets held there are famous throughout Europe.
